According to a Southern California body shop owner, the car finally turned up recently in a scrapyard in Mexico’s Baja region.
Stunt Driver Bud Ekins Piloting the Mustang in the 1968 Movie “Bullitt”
Ford engineers identified the VIN (Vehicle Information Number) as legitimately belonging to the “jump car” driven by stunt driver and McQueen friend Bud Ekins over the dangerous hills of Taylor Street in San Francisco in the film. In 1974, McQueen tried to find the car to purchase it, but was unsuccessful. For years rumors persisted that the car was stored in a Kentucky or Tennessee barn.
