The television show, “Batman, which ran for three series between 1966 and 1968, made actors Adam West (Batman) and Burt Ward (Robin) Hollywood stars. With Commissioner Gordon and Chief O’Hara, the show was fun and after seeing the Batmobile in-person, I can tell you that this beautiful car has stood the test of time.
The late car customizer George Barris built the Batmobile in just three weeks, which is amazing considering that 120 man hours went into its build time. Barris took a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car he had purchased for one dollar from Ford Motor Company. On board gadgets included the Batphone, a Bat-Ray Projector, tires that could automatically inflate, and a U-turn activated with parachutes ahead of the turn.
The car had remained in George Barris’ own collection until it was sold a little over two years ago.
The original black and red circuit car from the TV series sold for an astounding $4.62 million when it was bought by collector Rick Champagne in 2013.
The Batmobile went up for sale again, by Barrett-Jackson, one of the world’s leading collector car auction companies and sold for close to $5 million. Barris died on November, 2015. The King of the Customizers!
